Understanding Nail product ingredients + how to use allergen-free alternatives successfully in your nail bussiness

The last few days in the nail industry have felt overwhelming. Conversations are intense. Opinions are divided. Regulations are shifting. And many nail techs are quietly asking themselves the same question:

What does this mean for my career?

Let’s be honest. For most of us, nails are not “just” nails. They pay the bills. They cover the mortgage and rent. They fund our children’s activities. They support our families. When something threatens that stability, it doesn’t feel like business — it feels personal.

And when reactions happen, it shakes you.

My personal story from few years ago...

Years ago, one of my regular clients came in for her usual infill appointment. Routine. Comfortable. Predictable. After I removed her product, I remember freezing. My heart dropped. I was shocked.

I had been doing nails for more than half of my life. I was experienced. Educated. Careful. I genuinely believed something like that could never happen to me.

But it did. We were both heartbroken. And that moment changed me. Nail allergies are real. They can develop unexpectedly. And sometimes they escalate quickly. No matter how experienced you are, no matter how careful you believe you’ve been — it can still happen.

In the following months, I experienced four client reactions in less than six months.

If you’ve ever had a client walk in with a reaction, you understand the fear. The anxiety. The sleepless nights. The dread of your next appointment. Wondering every time someone sits at your table: Will this happen again?

My anxiety became overwhelming. I started questioning everything. At one point, I seriously considered walking away from my nail career completely.

Protecting My Business and My Peace of Mind

Eventually, I had to make a decision. I couldn’t risk my business. I couldn’t risk my reputation. And I couldn’t live in constant stress.

So I started researching.

I dug deeper into ingredients. I looked into alternative formulations. I studied different systems and brands. I learned more about common sensitizers and how overexposure plays a role in allergic reactions.

I want to be clear: HEMA itself is not “the enemy.” Chemistry is complex, and every ingredient has a purpose. But if I could reduce risk — even by 50% — why wouldn’t I?

For my peace of mind, I decided to transition into HEMA-free, Di-HEMA-free and HPMA-free products. I stocked up. I switched my system. I committed to change. At first, everything seemed fine. Application felt similar. The texture was pretty much same . I thought I had solved the problem. Then my clients started coming back for infills.

The hard truth about switching systems ...

Retention wasn’t the same. Lifting increased. Wear time was shorter. I felt defeated again.

For a moment, I thought, I can’t handle this.

But instead of quitting, I researched even more. And this is where I had a breakthrough:

HEMA-free, Di-HEMA-free and HPMA-free systems are not applied the same way as traditional systems.

Switching to lower-risk formulations isn’t just about buying new bottles. It’s about: prep, technique, product control, educating clients 

When I adapted my process instead of fighting it, retention improved. My confidence returned. My anxiety decreased. 

Most importantly, I felt in control again.

The chemistry is different. The adhesion mechanisms are different. Viscosity, curing times, layering techniques — everything requires adjustment.

You cannot expect the same results if you use the exact same technique.

That realization changed everything and over the time motivated me to fulfil my forever dream - my OWN nail brand.

Let's understand how the chemistry works 

HEMA (Hydroxyethyl Methacrylate) works as an adhesive because of its small molecular size and high reactivity, which allows it to bond extremely well to the natural nail plate. 

HEMA is a very small molecule. Because of its size, it can penetrate slightly into the microscopic layers of the natural nail after proper prep. When cured under a lamp, it polymerizes (hardens) and forms a network that mechanically interlocks with the nail surface. Think of it like tiny anchors gripping into microscopic grooves. That’s why retention is often excellent with HEMA-containing systems.

When you remove HEMA from a system, you remove that small, penetrating adhesive molecule. So manufacturers must rely on: larger monomers, different adhesion promoters and surface keratin bonding instead of micro-penetration

That’s why prep technique becomes even more critical when switching systems.

What are we using in our gels instead of HEMA or Di-HEMA ?

Bis Methacryloyloxyethyl Phosphate - This is key adhesion promoter in our HEMA free Rubber Base.

Phosphate monomers are excellent at bonding to keratin (the natural nail). They create chemical attraction between the polymer and the nail plate. Instead of relying on HEMA penetration, this ingredient:  Chemically interacts with the nail surface, improves surface bonding instead of penetrating deep into a nail and enhances retention.

In many modern HEMA-free systems, phosphate monomers replace HEMA’s anchoring role.

Bis-HEA Poly(1,4-Butanediol)-9/IPDI Copolymer - This is a urethane-based oligomer in our HEMA free Rubber Base . Provides flexibility, Strength, film formation and impact resistance. It does not penetrate like HEMA, but it builds a strong polymer backbone once cured.

Hydroxyethyl Acrylate/IPDI/PPG-15 Glyceryl Ether Copolymer -  Oligomer improving adhesion, Elasticity and self-levelling 

HEMA’s job is being distributed across multiple ingredients instead of relying on one small molecule. Instead of penetration-based adhesion, our Hema-free Rubber base  formula uses: Phosphate monomer for chemical surface bonding, Urethane oligomers for flexibility and structure, Crosslinkers for durability, High-performance multi photoinitiators for full cure

This creates a system that: Bonds more from the surface, Requires precise prep, Requires proper curing, need slightly different application technique - read here in our previous blog

Do we offer option for clients with extreme  nail allergies/sensitivities?

of course! Hybrid Gel System is completely free from HEMA, Di-HEMA, HPMA, IBOA, IBOMA, and the 10 most common acrylate allergens.

For optimal results, we recommend pairing the hybrid system with a HEMA-free rubber base. For clients with extreme sensitivities, we suggest using it with our Hard Base Coat, formulated with extremely clean and simple ingredients for maximum safety and comfort. Hard base works on film forming polymer base instead of penetrating nail layers. Film-forming polymers work mainly through physical adhesion as a surface roughness (the prep must be on the spot  with this system), solvent assisted softening - solvents like ethyl acetate temporarily soften the top layer of the nail and polymer flows slightly into these softened layers.

How the Film Forms

1.Liquid application: You brush or apply the product onto the nail.

2.Solvent evaporates (or light initiates polymerization): The polymer chains start linking together.

3.Chains entangle: They form a continuous, flexible, solid layer — the “film.”

4.Solid film grips nail plate: Retention comes from physical grip + polymer network strength.

Film-forming polymers stick by creating a strong, continuous layer that grips the surface, rather than chemically bonding like HEMA.

 

Choosing HEMA-, HPMA- and IBOA-free products does not mean compromising on results or accepting poor retention. It simply means adjusting your technique to work with a different type of chemistry.
