We know there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to nail products. Every client has different natural nails, different needs and a different lifestyle.

That’s exactly why at Nail Jam we created three different gel systems — giving nail techs the flexibility to choose the right material for everything from strong, durable extensions to lightweight, natural-looking overlays. 

I’ve already covered how to choose between Gummy Jam, Hybrid Jam and Hard Jam in a previous Nail Blog HERE about how to choose a right Gel system for your clients, but there is another important part of creating the perfect material match that sometimes gets overlooked: 

Your base coat!

The right base coat can make a huge difference to adhesion, retention and the overall performance of your chosen gel system. And just like builder gels, I don’t believe one base coat is necessarily right for every single client.

That’s where our Hero Trio comes in.

Here’s my guide to our three base coats, when I personally reach for each one and how you can pair them with our different gel systems.

Hard Base Coat

Our option for clients where ingredient selection is the an extra  priority

Hard Base Coat was the very first base coat we released at Nail Jam.

When paired with our Hybrid Jam, it creates a carefully formulated system without added HEMA, Di-HEMA, TPO, IBOA, IBOMA or HPMA, as well as being formulated without 22 commonly recognised acrylate allergens.

For this reason, this is the base coat I would personally consider when working with clients where previous sensitivities mean I want to be extremely selective about the ingredients I’m using.

It can be paired with both our Hybrid Jam and Hard Jam systems.

In my experience, the retention isn’t quite as strong as our HEMA-Free Rubber Base, so preparation and precise application are particularly important. With thorough nail prep and correct application, however, you can still achieve beautiful, long-lasting results.

Best paired with:
Hybrid Jam + Hard Jam

Why choose it:
A carefully formulated option when ingredient selection is your main priority, for clients with history of  allergic reactions.

Manufactured in the EU.

Important: HEMA-free or reduced-allergen formulations cannot guarantee that an allergic reaction will not occur. Clients with a known acrylate allergy should seek appropriate medical advice before using UV/LED nail products.

HEMA-Free Rubber Base

My everyday favourite. !!!!

If you asked me which base coat I reach for the most behind my nail desk, this is it.

Our HEMA-Free Rubber Base is my absolute go-to, and I personally use it on around 90% of my clients.

With correct preparation and application, it provides fantastic adhesion and retention while remaining incredibly versatile. It is formulated without added HEMA, Di-HEMA, HPMA, TPO and IBOA.

One of the things that makes this formula  interesting is its phosphate adhesion technology.

The formula contains a phosphate adhesion monomer designed to promote bonding with the keratin of the natural nail without penetrating deeper layers of natural nail, helping create strong adhesion without relying on HEMA. This technology reduces the risk of allergic reactions. 

For me, this is the perfect balance between modern formulation  and reliable salon performance.

Even better, you can pair it with all three Nail Jam gel systems:

Gummy Jam + Hybrid Jam + Hard Jam

That makes it an incredibly practical base to have on your nail desk and the one I would recommend as the most versatile option within our trio.

It’s manufactured in the EU and available in both our standard 12ml brush-on bottle and a practical 50ml refill bottle for busy nail techs.

Why choose it:
My everyday choice for reliable adhesion, great retention and maximum versatility.

Rubber Base “Super Stick”

When nothing else wants to stick!

And finally… meet the problem solver.

Super Stick is the base coat I reach for when everything else has been tried and those extremely tricky nails simply refuse to cooperate.

Unlike our previous two options, Super Stick contains HEMA and HPMA, so this isn’t the base I personally choose as my everyday option.

Instead, I keep it for those difficult nails where standard adhesion just isn’t giving me the retention I need.

The application technique is also slightly different.

Super Stick should be applied in an extremely thin layer — almost like a dry-brush application —  scrubbed into the natural nail plate.

You don’t need a thick layer (if applied thick the gel just won't work rightr, that's why is very important to follow the right instructions and use it as a thin strong bonder) . The goal is to create that thin adhesion layer before continuing with your chosen gel system.

Super Stick can be paired with all three systems: Gummy Jam, Hybrid Jam and Hard Jam.

Best paired with:
Gummy Jam + Hybrid Jam + Hard Jam

Why choose it:
Your last-resort adhesion base for exceptionally tricky nails where other options haven’t provided enough retention.

So, Which Base Coat Should You Choose?

This is exactly what prescriptive manicure is all about.

Rather than automatically using the same products on every client, look at the natural nail, previous retention, lifestyle, desired result and relevant product sensitivities — then build your system around that individual client.

For most of my clients, I start with HEMA-Free Rubber Base because it’s my most versatile everyday option.

When ingredient selection is particularly important, Hard Base Coat gives me another carefully formulated option for those clients who previously experienced allergic reaction to gel products.

And when I’m dealing with that one client whose nails simply refuse to hold anything? That’s when Super Stick comes out and saves the day.

Three base coats. Three different purposes.

Because the goal isn’t to find one product that works for absolutely everyone.
