Let’s Talk Thixotropic Hard Gels ✨
Being a nail tech in 2026 can sometimes feel confusing. There are so many different gel systems, viscosities, techniques and products available — but the most important part is understanding when and how to use them (nail blog link), so you can choose the right system for your client’s nails.
We’ve already spoken about the differences between soft, hard and hybrid gels, so this time I wanted to focus on something a little different:
Thixotropic Hard Gels.
Thixotropic gels are relatively new compared with traditional hard gels, although they’ve already been used within the nail industry for several years. So what actually makes them different?
What does “thixotropic” mean?
The scientific definition sounds complicated, but the concept is actually quite simple.
A thixotropic gel changes its viscosity when you work with it.
Think of it like this:
1. In the pot:
The gel feels thicker and more jelly-like. It holds its shape and doesn’t easily move around.
2. Under your brush:
As you start manipulating the gel, the movement and shear from your brush temporarily make it feel smoother and more fluid, allowing you to guide it exactly where you want it.
3. When you stop:
The gel begins returning towards its thicker structure again, helping it stay where you placed it rather than continuing to flow towards the sidewalls and cuticle.
Why can this be helpful for nail techs?
For beginners learning to work with hard gel, thixotropic products can offer that little bit of extra control and working time. You can move the product, perfect your apex and correct your shape without feeling like you’re constantly racing against a gel that wants to run into the cuticle.
For experienced nail techs, it can also give you more flexibility with your working technique. Depending on your speed and application style, you may even feel comfortable working on more than one nail before curing.
On the other hand, if you love working very quickly, one nail at a time, and want a thinner product with very high self-levelling properties, you may prefer something like our Hybrid Jams.
Neither is better — they simply behave differently.
Not all thixotropic gels are the same!!!
Some thixotropic hard gels can be extremely thick, which can also mean they require more manipulation and potentially more refining afterwards.
As a nail tech myself, this was something I really considered when developing our Hard Jams. I wanted a medium-consistency thixotropic hard gel that sits somewhere in the middle.
It gives beginners extra control and time to perfect their application, while still offering experienced techs very good self-levelling properties — meaning minimal, and sometimes no, refining is needed.
Why are thixotropic gels so good for extensions?
This is where their behaviour becomes particularly useful.
When building extensions on forms or half tips, you need enough product to create proper structure and strength. A thixotropic gel allows you to build and control that structure without the product immediately flowing down the sides of the nail.
You move it → it becomes easier to manipulate. You stop → it holds its position for a little while.
That makes creating longer or more structured shapes much easier to control.
So what’s actually happening inside the gel? 🧪
This is where the science gets really interesting.
Thixotropic formulas can use specific modifiers — such as certain silica-based materials or polymers — which help create a temporary internal structure within the gel.
When the gel is sitting undisturbed, interactions between these components help create a microscopic network throughout the formula. This restricts movement within the gel, which is why it appears thicker and more jelly-like.
Once you start working the gel with your brush, the brush disrupts that structure and the viscosity decreases.
The gel becomes easier to move and manipulate.
When that movement stops, the internal structure gradually rebuilds and the gel thickens again.
